PCI and McGraw Hill Save Time, Money and Lives with Dynamic DVD

Production Craft, Inc. (PCI) recently created five DVDs for the National Safety Council’s First Aid and Basic Life Support instructor kits published by McGraw Hill. The DVD content included four skills videos teaching Basic Life Support (CPR) and First Aid. The entire project required creating more than 230 minutes of original, unique content in an extremely tight deadline. The first DVD had to be completed in only 3 months – one third the normal timeframe for a project of this scope.

Producer/Directors Dawn Arnold and Kathleen Rodak began the process by determining program goals and production styles. They set an intense schedule and specific criteria for meeting the program goals, on-time and on-budget.

The following provides a program clip and an overview of each production.

First Aid
Program Goals:
Teach the viewer how to recognize and act in an emergency situation.
Provide realistic dramatizations of ailments to help students recognize and differentiate between various conditions such as a stroke or heart attack.
Illustrate step by step instructions for treating ailments in Professional version.
Challenges:
Create 10 very realistic vignettes.
Limited by budget and deadline to 6 days of location production.
PCI Value Added Solutions:
Intense location research to find three locations to represent a warehouse, corporate office, elderly residence, two different homes, a gymnasium, classroom and parking lot.
Shooting with two cameras, multiple takes captured a variety of angles.
Camera motion and shutter effects to add drama.
Results:
Saved time and money in production set-up, crew overtime, and location fees.
Multiple cameras increased production pace, while adding value to the production quality.
Dramatized action and captured viewer’s attention.

Basic Life Support
Program Goals:
Create a synchronized self-instructional video for mastering certification skills.
Provide instructors with multiple versions of the program (layperson or professional; 1:1 or 1:2 student: manikin practice sessions).
Challenges:
Demanding program for on-camera talent, requiring precise timing of action.
Deadline and budget limited production to 3 shooting days.
Deliver 3 hours of programming on one DVD.
PCI Value Added Solutions:
Provide audio feed of both voice over “scratch track” and director comments to talent, live, via ear prompter.
Develop content segments for multiple uses in various versions of the program.
Write video segments to the disc once. Use a complex combination of chapter and story authoring techniques to reference video segments (as many as four times) to create multiple versions of the program.
Results:
Timing was accurate and director could coach talent without cutting or tainting natural sound on set.
Reduced number of takes on set and edits in post.
Delivery on one disc, simplified user experience & saved client duplication costs.
Seamless instruction for a variety of audience needs.

PCI's value added solutions combined with meticulous quality control (in particular the detailed review of complex authoring commands, on each disc, on multiple systems) resulted in the delivery of just one round of check discs meeting client approval ahead of schedule.

First Aid was awarded a Certificate of Merit by the Jury of the 2006 INTERCOM Competition.
