Shooting Outdoors Title
Permits:
  • Do you need a permit to shoot in a public outdoor location?  Check with your local film office, in Chicago you need a permit anytime you or your equipment will be blocking a side walk or street.  To learn more about when a permit is required and to apply for a permit visit the Chicago Film Office or call them at (312) 744-6415.
Electricity:
  • Do you have access to electricity?  If not make sure you have enough battery power for your monitors, cameras and lights – bring extra battery power.
Audio:
  • Make note of your location sound issues - traffic patterns, bus stop, trains, air traffic, nearby construction, etc.

  • Plan for Wind.  To avoid audio problems caused by wind, use a foam windscreen for Lavalier microphones, a windscreen for shotgun boom microphones and on really windy days opt for a Zeppelin for the shotgun boom microphone.
Lighting:
  • Where is the sun when you are shooting?  Ideally you want to shoot when the sun is behind or overhead the camera – facing the subject.  Depending upon the intensity of the sun you might want to use HMI Lights 5600 degrees Kelvin Daylight equivalent lights to light the subject and reduce intense shadows.
  • You can use a Net to diffuse direct sunlight hitting the subject - this will even out the lighting, decrease harsh shadows, and cut down the intensity of the sun.
  • You can also use a Net to diffuse the background to match the foreground.  If you are shooting in the shadows, and the background is in full sunlight, you may want to use a net to keep the background from being blown-out.
  • A Flag can be used to keep direct sunlight off of a subject.  The only time you will effectively use a flag is when the sun is low on the horizon – as in early morning or late afternoon.
  • Neutral density filters can be used to allow less light through the lens, allowing for the camera to capture more detail in the shot.
  • Not enough Sun?  You can use reflectors to direct existing sunlight onto subject.
What if it rains :
  • Have a back-up indoor location or schedule a rain day.
Accessories:
  • Heavy duty stands for lights, nets, flags, etc.
  • Weights and sandbags to hold lights, reflectors, and nets in place.
  • Rope
  • Make-up – Advise women to wear slightly heavier than normal street make up, use powder for men and women on shinny spots.
